Stag beetles are one of the most spectacular insects. The male’s large jaws look just like the antlers of a stag. They spend most of their life underground as larvae, only emerging for a few weeks in the summer to find a mate and reproduce. A fully-grown grub can be up to 110mm long. They are nearly always found below ground and can be as deep as half a metre down. Stag beetles have been known to infest homes, usually older ones and feed off the wood in the walls, doors, and window sills. The thick, armored shell of stag beetles protects its body well and is split into three parts to enable the stag beetle to move around quickly.
